We have had a very negative experience with our tax pro, Divina Schere. Not only was she difficult to communicate with (she never called me back and doesn't do anything online so she never responded to my email when I tried to speak with her), she left an hour long voicemail on my husband's phone, during which she had an appointment with another customer. We have that customer's SSN and personal information recorded in that voicemail. This is a serious breach in data privacy. When we communicated this back to the office, they seemed unconcerned. DO NOT TRUST THEM WITH YOUR PRIVATE INFORMATION. I have been trying to get assigned to work with someone else, and H&R Block closed my case without communicating with us. Very dissatisfied all around.

BEWARE MILITARY and RETIRED MILITARY!! Despite being pleased two years ago with this H&R Block, after last year's filing I am completely dissatisfied with this location and H&R Block in general... Long story short, they screwed up my 2022 Maryland return TWICE! My initial appointment was with Divina. I explained to her that I retired from the military that year and part of my earnings would not be taxed to MD since I was a South Dakota resident while active duty. This either just went in one ear and out the other or she didn't know or understand that she needed to file both an MD resident and non resident state returns. Not only that, but she didn't ask any questions that could help me with my federal return (I owed $12,000!) and just tried to get in out the door as fast as possible. She said I owed around $700 to MD. I noticed when I got home that she filed the MD wrong. She had my active duty pay being taxed by MD. So I called her back and it took forever for her to talk to me. I kept calling and calling as it was almost April 15th. One time she picked up and rudely said "what do you want?". So I called H&R block at Fort Meade and talked to their supervisor (also Odenton's supervisor). She handled the taxes and also Hazel at the Odenton location worked on correcting my return, not Divina. Hazel then told me I was going to get a return of almost $4,000 from MD because I wasn't a full-time resident in MD for that year. I was happy. Well....Maryland got the corrected form and turns out Hazel was wrong. I ended up only getting $80 back. Since Odenton location was closed for the season I called main H&R Block number. They contacted Sue from Glen Burnie location. Sue contacted me but literally it took 3 weeks of me calling her for her to actually take a look at my amended return and what MD did. Every time she said "oh I promise I will call you back". She never did. When she finally did see it, she agreed MD was correct and then asked if I wanted a refund for my filing fee for MD return since it was incorrect, I said yes please. I never got the refund. I called her again for another 3 weeks, and same thing. Answered, said she was busy and "would get to it". Never did. Called Main H&R number and they said they can't make them refund me but were going to put in a request. It did nothing. How can a location, that is surrounded by military, not understand how to file a military member's return? If they can't handle these types of cases, which I get are complicated, where usually service members and/or their families are from different states, or people retire then reside in MD, then why service this area at all??? Certainly not using them again and would NOT recommend them!

I scheduled a 7 pm meeting with my tax preparer who failed to show up. I called the office to see what the issue was, and he answered only to tell me that he had not even prepared my tax documents for our meeting and wanted to know if he could call me later that evening or tomorrow instead. Highly unprofessional.

If your tax return is straight forward, H&R block with this group of staff is likely sufficient, 50% of the time. Our tax return was made minimally more complex by an EV tax credit and IRA contributions. Long story short, we were denied $7500 in tax credit because Hazel simply has limited tax code knowledge and technical competency/reliability. We corrected multiple of her mistakes before submitting our return. Unfortunately we did not catch all mistakes. She submitted the wrong vehicle model information (she put down RAV4, which is famously a gasoline engine-powered vehicle, for an EV credit application), AND she made mistakes associated with our IRA contribution. For the latter error, we had to refile our whole 2020 tax return with a CPA in order to correct her mistakes; that cost an additional $1000. We reached out to her supervisor to help with correcting her mistakes. He was unwilling to troubleshoot or look deeper into our case, despite us telling him the exact errors that Hazel had made. He did offer additional service if we were willing to pay extra. It's been 1.5 yrs since working with Hazel, and we have just gotten the above issues resolved with the IRS by spending significant time and money to reverse the mistakes that she'd made. I imagine you would be better off filing taxes on your own.
